Summary  

The Fitness Center Manager oversees the team of Fitness Center staff including Health Fitness Specialists, Personal Trainers, Group Fitness Instructors and Interns to effectively deliver our professional fitness services, classes, appointments, assessments and engagement programs. This role focuses on optimizing member engagement through high-quality exercise instruction, personal training, various group fitness classes and programs as well as staff development. The Fitness Center Manager works to ensure a premier member experience through effective staff scheduling, training, and continuous program evolution.  

Essential Duties  

Fitness Staff Management & Development: 

Assess staffing needs and provide direct supervision for full- and part-time fitness specialists, group fitness instructors, personal trainers, interns, and work-study students. 

Maintain performance expectations and conduct regular performance reviews for supervised staff. 

Lead the recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding processes for new fitness staff and by semester for the intern program. 

Develop and implement continuous staff development including regular in-services and training. 

Ensure that new members are encouraged to start with orientation or other staff engagement, tracked in a caseload process, and that exercise programs are carried out in a safe and effective manner following ACSM guidelines. 

Cultivate a culture where every staff member consistently offers superior customer service, demonstrating strong work ethic, ingenuity, customer care, and attention to detail. 

Approve and monitor time records and attendance for supervised staff. 

Provide direct supervision for work-study students assigned to their respective teams. 

 

Program Development & Delivery: 

Support NIFS annual programming calendar by overseeing the development and execution of the group fitness offerings, incentive and education-based programs and campaigns to drive engagement in NIFS fee-based and complimentary services.  

Create and implement action plans to achieve stated program goals; initiate new programs as part of an ongoing effort to stimulate participation. 

Properly train Fitness Specialists, Group Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainer and Interns on program promotion and supporting members in successful adherence.  

Oversee a commitment to excellence in all programs by completing participant/member surveys and other metric sources. 

Oversee the scheduling and performance standards of fitness testing, exercise instruction, and member consultations conducted by staff; provide leadership to staff for the development and instruction of safe and effective exercise prescriptions complete with proper record keeping and documentation following ACSM standards. Oversee the secure handling of member Personal Health Information (PHI), from collection, storage to destruction. 

Oversee staff-to-member interaction; track facility usage and membership engagement; monitor and evaluate programs to identify trends and outcomes. 

Group Fitness:   

Oversee the coordination and scheduling of group fitness classes and staffing, both in-house, as well as overseeing the partnership with Marion County Health Department and Indy Parks. 

Recruit, audition, and assess group fitness instructors to ensure safe program delivery; coordinating subbing needs as needed. 

Maintain records of current certifications for instructors including industry-related certifications as well as CPR/AED and first aid credentials.  

Review classes and programs on an ongoing basis to ensure they meet member needs and remain relevant; maintain systems to effectively track class participation and evaluate engagement to determine calendar changes.  

Teach fitness classes, provide member support, and assist in exercise areas as needed. 

Fitness Center Operations Support: 

Collaborate regularly with the Operations & Events Manager on facility cleanliness and equipment issues, staff performance and schedules, and programming preparations to maintain NIFS standard of service delivery and exceptional customer experiences. 

Aid in member engagement and professional growth by developing and instructing group exercise classes and fitness programs, writing blogs or articles to further our educational mission. 

In the absence of the Assistant Director, serve as decision-maker for fitness related operations. 

Maintain familiarity with and abide by the policies stated in the NIFS Employee Handbook. 

Provide occasional manager on duty shifts on weekends to assist with oversight of the fitness center's operations.  

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in fitness management, exercise science or a related field from an accredited college or university; minimum of two years experience in management; proven record of supervising, motivating, and leading staff. 
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification required
  • ACSM certified or experience with industry guidelines preferred 
  • May, at any time, be required to submit to and successfully pass a thorough background check and/or drug screen
